The AI-DPA research program was launched with a kick-off event on January 22, 2024 at the Gutenberg Digital Hub. The program, a joint project of Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the University of Koblenz, is entitled “Analysis and Interpretation of Unstructured Data and Processes in Two- and Three-Dimensional Application Scenarios with Machine Learning”. The five doctoral students were introduced to the public in the presence of the Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of Science, Clemens Hoch, the President of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Susanne Weissman, and the Vice President for Research and Transfer, Prof. Dr. Anett Mehler-Bicher.
Computational visualistics and Predictive Process Monitoring
In two sections, the doctorates are dedicated to issues in the field of computational visualistics (such as accessibility in indoor and outdoor spaces) and predictive process monitoring, in other words the recognition, prediction, and optimization of processes (for example in chatbots, click data, and media data) using machine learning. The project aims to contribute to the digital transformation of the media industry, the medical world, and other sectors. The objective is to create the basis for well-founded, data-supported decisions. The program provides insights and developments for progressive application of AI methods.
Minister of Science Clemens Hoch emphasized the importance of AI research for economic and technological development in Rhineland-Palatinate. University President Prof. Dr. Susanne Weissman also expressed positive views on the potential of the new research program and praised the interdisciplinary approach in particular. The overarching cooperation between the participating universities and the respective schools as well as the doctoral students promises innovative approaches and solutions to challenges in data processing and process optimization.
Regional data partners from the media and medical sectors
Prof. Dr. Sven Pagel, spokesperson for the research program, is very pleased with the launch: “The AI-DPA research program is a shining example of how academic research and practical application can go hand in hand to solve real-world problems.” Two regional data partners from the media and medical industries are actively involved in the project to ensure that the research is both academic and application-oriented. Rebecca Glinka from ARD Online took part in the kick-off meeting as Head of Backend, Operations and Data. On behalf of the Institute for Digital Health Data, the new Managing Director Philipp Kachel outlined conceivable application scenarios. The research program also has the potential to integrate other data partners in the future.
As part of the research program, a total of five young researchers from both universities are working towards a doctorate. Of particular note here is that three of the five doctoral students in the field of Information Systems and Applied Computer Science are women. The kick-off meeting gave the doctoral candidates the opportunity to introduce themselves and their research approaches and objectives. The diversity and depth of the topics clearly showed how diverse the AI-DPA research group is. The five future doctoral candidates will be jointly supervised by three university professors – Prof. Dr. Patrick Delfmann (Deputy Spokesperson), Prof. Dr. Peer Neubert, and Prof. Dr. Dietrich Paulus - and three professors from universities of applied sciences – Prof. Dr. Thomas Klauer, Prof. Dr. Sven Pagel (Spokesperson), and Prof. Dr. Tobias Walter.
