Understand Music

Media Design graduation film “Understand Music” by Florian Geyer wins in the Best 2D/3D Animation category at the Eyes & Ears Festival

“Understand Music” is an experimental animated film that aims to visualize the various facets of music. The work combines a love of music with a love of motion graphics—both thematically and audiovisually. The setting resembles a bird’s-eye view of a document that can be interpreted both as a textbook on music and as a music notebook encoding musical notation. Various musical concepts are illustrated using experimental forms of graphic notation.

Florian Geyer’s graduation film was created as part of the Time-Based Media program at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. The project was supervised by Prof. Anja Stöffler.

From the Eyes & Ears jury’s commentary:
“Do you understand music in all its complexity? If not, this experimental animated trailer will help you. And even if you do understand music, take a look at this minimalist explanatory journey anyway: Fundamentals, technical terms, and aspects of musicology are presented in a clear and streamlined manner. This visual language is supported by a musical accompaniment for the animated sequences that is meticulously tailored to every detail. Conclusion: We don’t have to understand music, but this portrayal of music teaches us to appreciate it.”
