To shape a new ecology of architectural practice, we must overcome the common perception that architects merely design buildings. Our global challenges are too complex to be solved through an object-focused approach. In recent decades, architects have allowed themselves to be marginalized into mere agents of neoliberal spatial production—architects as consumers of regulations, spatial programs, and building products. We need to broaden our perspective so that architecture can once again become a productive process for exploring, understanding, and shaping our complex modern world.
