Online steps for new colleagues

You are starting at Mainz University of Applied Sciences as a lecturer or staff member? This checklist is designed to explain a few steps to make it easier for you to get started with our online services (depending on which department, discipline, or office you belong to, additional specific steps may need to be taken in coordination with them).

Checklist for a quick start

  • Activate your IT account
    Your central IT account (university login data consisting of your personal user name and password) enables you to use a variety of university online services. You will receive it from the Center for Information and Communication Technology (ZIK). To activate your IT account, you have to overwrite your initial password once.   • Activate your email address
    Together with your IT account you will receive an official university email address from the ZIK. Please use this email address exclusively to communicate with students and employees of the university and check your mail account regularly. You can log in using a mail-web interface and your IT account.

  • Get a university Zoom license for online-based synchronous teaching
    At Mainz University of Applied Sciences, Zoom is currently the main video conferencing tool. You will need a Zoom meeting license to hold meetings with your students. You can obtain one by logging in with your IT account to hs-mainz-de.zoom.us.

  • Register in OpenOLAT, our learning platform for teaching
    You can use what are known as OpenOLAT courses to provide course materials (scripts, videos, and more) as well as assignments to your students, and to communicate with them. You will receive information on how to register in OpenOLAT and how to activate your course section by email from the Media & Teaching team.

  • Panopto - the university’s video server
    Panopto is the university’s central video server. As a faculty member at the university, you are given creator rights in Panopto so that you can upload and edit (learning) videos and recordings. You can easily integrate Panopto videos into your OLAT courses. You can find all the necessary information and helpful instructions in the OLAT course Panopto for Instructors.   •  Wi-Fi if you need an internet connection in the university building
    You can access the easyroam Wi-Fi network at both university locations. For more information, please click hier. (The link leads to an internal page of the Mainz University of Applied Sciences. You have to log in with your IT account to access this page.)

  • (Only for faculty) HIP or “When and where do my classes take place?”
    HIP is the university information portal. Your personal information is entered there, as well as your class schedule. You also log in to HIP using your IT account.

  • CIM or “Where can I find information about students and exams?”
    CIM CIM stands for Campus Information Mainz; it contains modules for student applications, as well as student and exam administration. You also log in to CIM using your IT account. Lecturers enter grades of students there, for example in the role of examiner.

  • Seafile, the cloud storage
    Seafile is the only cloud service approved at the university. ZIK provides login information and instructions (login is required using your IT account).

  • Intranet, the internal section of the University's homepage for staff
    Here you will find various information on administrative procedures, corporate design, and more. Log in by clicking on this icon in the menu bar.

  • VPN access for a secure connection
    Some online services (such as access to library resources) can only be accessed over VPN. This requires the download of software. You can find all information on the ZIK VPN page (login required).
