Mainz University of Applied Sciences Optimizes Teaching Through an Innovative Partnership

Planning crane operations is a challenging task in the construction industry. For this reason, the Department of Civil Engineering at Mainz University of Applied Sciences has launched an exciting collaboration with CRANIMAX to integrate digital crane operation planning into its curriculum. The Zweibrücken-based company specializes in developing a software solution that makes projects involving mobile cranes more efficient and safer.

The collaboration focuses on applying the software in the Department of Civil Engineering’s curriculum. Under the direction of Prof. Jochen Lüer, the software, called “CRANEbee,” was integrated into Mainz University of Applied Sciences’ “virtual lab.” This gives students and staff access to the software and enables them to use it effectively.

The software provided enables students to view the selected mobile crane in a 3D CAD visualization. Using the software, they can immediately make changes to the parameters and instantly calculate the effects on support loads, crane geometry, and the required setup configuration. The visualization updates in real time to reflect the new conditions, allowing adjustments to be made quickly and precisely.

Thanks to the built-in CAD interface, it is possible to transfer the created plan directly into the 3D CAD software. In addition, students can easily integrate Google Maps or other plans. On this basis, they have the freedom to flexibly position the crane, copy it, and reposition it as often as needed.

In the “Interdisciplinary Project” module, which serves as the capstone module for the master’s programs in Civil Engineering, students have the opportunity to work on assignments using the software. They were supported in this by Prof. Jochen Lüer and research assistants Frank Reis (Construction Operations) and Christian Deichmann (BIM Lab). These hands-on exercises provide the aspiring civil engineers with valuable experience that they can apply in their future careers.

The continuous development of the software enables students to prepare for future construction projects in a practical manner. The successful partnership between Mainz University of Applied Sciences and CRANIMAX is a prime example of research and teaching in Rhineland-Palatinate. The free provision of the software solution enriches the Construction Management track within the department and equips students to meet the digital challenges of the future.
