Franziska Klemstein has held another tandem professorship at Mainz University of Applied Sciences since June 1, 2023, as part of the project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research Future: Career Path to a University of Applied Sciences Professorship , funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. As a tandem professor, she can carry out her duties as part of a position at both Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the Academy of Sciences and Literature. We are delighted to have been able to recruit Franziska for this position and warmly welcome her to Mainz University of Applied Sciences.
Franziska Klemstein, who previously worked as a research assistant in Digital Humanities at the Bauhaus University Weimar and earned her Ph.D. in 2020 at the Technical University , is researching how digital tools and computer-aided approaches can be used, critically examined, and further developed within the humanities and cultural studies. She also intends to incorporate these questions into her teaching, through which she will assist Professors Kai-Christian Bruhn and Torsten Schrade until the end of 2025 as part of a specialized professorship.
Her central focus in teaching is to strengthen the development of competencies in the area of digital technologies within the humanities and cultural studies. This includes teaching various technologies as well as adapting and discussing different methods. She places particular importance on the use of open-source technologies and open science strategies.
One of her key questions is how existing humanities methods can be expanded through digital tools and algorithmic procedures to support qualitative findings and to confirm or refute previous research assumptions through new approaches.
“As part of the tandem professorship, I am particularly looking forward to collaborating with various institutions in the GLAM sector in the Rhine-Main region, as well as to developing research questions, methods, and outreach strategies in the field of digital cultural heritage in general and architectural history and historic preservation in particular.”
Franziska Klemstein studied art history and history, as well as art science and art technology, at Freie Universität Berlin, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and Technische Universität Berlin. Her dissertation on the topic “Heritage Preservation Between System and Society: The Diversity of Heritage Preservation Processes in the GDR (1952–1975)” was published in 2021.
