With a significantly revised overall concept, Mainz University of Applied Sciences—back on campus for the first time since the start of the pandemic—held an Open House on March 26 for the public and, above all, prospective students.

In a well-attended lecture, Prof. Dr. Pascal Neis spoke about the visualization of police reports in Mainz. He presented a method for visualizing press releases—such as those from the Mainz Police Department—on a map using freely available software and open data, and making them accessible to an interested audience or the media. He also addressed the associated risks.

On the main stage in the auditorium, master’s students Vitus Graule and Julian Stockemer, accompanied by Prof. Dr. Pascal Neis, spoke under the title “Through the Wall: The Potential of Augmented Reality (AR) ” about the experiences they gained while working on their master’s thesis.In their project, they focused on exploring the potential of AR in the context of visualizing geodata and user interaction. The work was part of the GEMEINSAM research project at i3mainz.

Two school classes that had traveled from Wetzlar to learn about the geoinformatics and surveying program were guided by Carina Justus through the university, the laboratories, and up to the measurement roof.

As always on Information Day, the department received active support from the State Office for Surveying and Geospatial Information (LVermGeo). Stefanie Muno-Meier provided information about the combined degree program, which the Surveying and Cadastral Administration has been successfully offering for several years in cooperation with the Department of Geoinformatics and Surveying at Mainz University of Applied Sciences.
