At the end of the semester, students enrolled in the “Municipal Transportation Infrastructure” module of the master’s program in “Civil Engineering—Existing Structures” visited the municipality of Lörzweiler. As part of the module, the students developed a design for the redevelopment of the town center, which included the necessary road and civil engineering work, traffic management planning, public transportation connections, and a financing plan.
At the invitation of the municipality—represented in person by Mayor Steffan Haub, Deputy Mayors Dietmar Muscheid and Michaela Nagel, and Dr. Robert Scheurer, mayor of the association of municipalities—the students presented their design at the Hohberghalle in Lörzweiler. Following the presentation, there was an in-depth discussion with the approximately 30 residents in attendance to gather further ideas for the design of the town center.

“We were able to forge new connections and create a particularly practical exam situation for the students,” says Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rainer Hess, the module coordinator, with satisfaction. How and when the project will be implemented remains to be determined. With the students’ help, a planning foundation was established that the municipality of Lörzweiler can use to continue its work.
