Innovative Research on Prestressed Segmented Towers

Under the supervision of Prof. Andreas Garg from Mainz University of Applied Sciences, our former colleague and doctoral candidate Lutz Loh successfully defended his dissertation on Tuesday, May 16, in Wuppertal. This doctoral degree represents an important milestone in his academic career, and we would like to warmly congratulate him on his outstanding achievement.

Lutz Loh was a student at Mainz University of Applied Sciences from October 2010 to May 2016, during which time he earned both his bachelor’s degree in international civil engineering and his master’s degree in civil engineering. He then worked as a research assistant at iS-mainz from June 1, 2016, to June 30, 2022. During this time, he was involved in various research and development projects, including the PCC Tower project. In this project, he researched and developed an innovative precast concrete concept for the construction of particularly tall onshore wind turbines. The project was funded by the BMWi as part of a ZIM cooperation project. In addition, as part of the “InnoProm—Innovation and Doctoral Studies” funding initiative, he focused on the optimized modular construction of wind turbines using precast concrete components. In this context, Lutz Loh also wrote his dissertation titled “On the Torsional Behavior of Prestressed Segmented Towers—A Verification Model for Overpressed and Gapped Segment Joints with a Circular Ring Cross-Section.”

 

As part of his research, Lutz Loh developed a verification method for segment joints subjected to torsion and bending. During his collaborative doctoral program, he was supervised by Prof. Dr. Bernd Naujoks of the University of Wuppertal and Prof. Dr. Andreas Garg of Mainz University of Applied Sciences. On May 16, 2023, the dissertation defense finally took place at the University of Wuppertal, where Lutz Loh completed his doctoral examination with summa cum laude honors. His impressive academic success is a testament to his outstanding dedication and hard work.

Since July 1, 2022, Lutz Loh has been working at the renowned firm Verheyen Ingenieure GmbH & Co. KG. His extensive knowledge and experience in civil engineering are a valuable asset to the company.

We are proud to have supported Lutz Loh on his journey to earning his doctorate and congratulate him warmly on this significant achievement. His research will undoubtedly make a valuable contribution to the further development of wind turbines. We wish him all the best in his future professional endeavors.
