With a successful event and an accompanying exhibition at the LUX Pavilion of Mainz University of Applied Sciences, the Mainz Center for Digitality in the Humanities and Cultural Studies (mainzed) celebrated its tenth anniversary on April 29, 2026, with mainzedZWEI26.
Students Present Their Projects
The event kicked off with a group of students from the master’s program in Digital Methodology in the Humanities and Cultural Studies, who presented the results of their practical projects. They provided an extremely impressive insight into current research findings, ranging from natural language processing to spatially referenced data in academic game development. As part of their studies, they were also responsible for organizing and carrying out this part of the event.

At 6:00 p.m., the program continued under the title “Digitality and Diversity—The Humanities NOW.” In terms of content, the evening built on the first edition of the mainzedZWEIxx series in 2016 and placed its central question— Digitality and Diversity: The Humanities in 2026 —in the context of the present. The focus was on developments over the past ten years as well as current perspectives on digitality and diversity in the humanities and cultural studies.
Highlights from the event
Dr. Katharina Bahlmann from the Center for Minor Subjects introduced the topic with a keynote address. The subsequent, very lively audience discussion was moderated by three panelists from the field of digital humanities and cultural studies, who also contributed their own insights: Prof. Dr. Øyvind Eide from the Institute for Digital Humanities at the University of Cologne, Dr. Jonathan Steller from the Digital Academy of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, and Dr. Anne Klammt from the Hannah Arendt Institute for the Study of Totalitarianism, who had served as executive director of mainzed until 2019.
Projects by mainzed Partner Institutions
The accompanying exhibition also drew great interest, with the partner institutions offering insights into ten years of mainzed’s work and projects. Combined with the students’ exhibition, this created a vibrant picture of the ongoing activities at mainzed.
