On July 8, the Department of Applied Computer Science and Geodesy welcomed a visit from the advanced computer science class at Alfred-Delp-Schule in Dieburg. After a brief tour of the university campus, Tim Herrscher from the Student Office provided the students with some general information about studying at universities and colleges, as well as details on the financial aid options available to prospective students.
At 10:30 a.m., the academic portion of the program began with a presentation by Prof. Anita Sellent on the fields of study Applied Computer Science and Geoinformatics and Surveying. Following that, Fabian Püschel, a staff member at i3mainz, gave a short lecture on virtual reality, supplemented by Julian Stockemer, also a staff member at i3mainz, who provided information on GPS. The students were able to apply what they learned from the short lectures in a hands-on exercise using VR headsets, solving tasks in a virtual satellite simulation under the guidance of Julian Stockemer.
After a lunch break, the program continued with a guided tour of the department’s teaching and research laboratories and a presentation of several projects. Alexander Rolwes presented the students with a spatial analysis for predicting parking conditions, which is a result of his dissertation. Prof. Klonowski led them up to the measurement roof and explained the antennas installed there, which are used to enhance the accuracy of the GPS signal. Afterward, the students were able to take their own distance measurements to prominent landmarks in the surrounding area, thereby gaining an understanding of the orders of magnitude and practical challenges involved in surveying. Next, Sven Kaulfersch welcomed the visitors to the equipment checkout area and showed them the various drones, which have become an indispensable part of the department’s curriculum.
Finally, Fabian Püschel led the visitors to the CAVE, a room for visualizing geodata, and explained the installed sensor systems and the application scenarios being tested there. The program concluded at 3:00 p.m. with a Q&A session, after which the event came to a close.
