At GI_Salzburg 2022, the largest symposium in the German-speaking world in the field of geoinformatics, Mainz University of Applied Sciences was well represented by a number of students and staff members in early July.
Lukas Haas and Florian Knoch presented the results of their student project, which was developed under the supervision of Pascal Neis as part of the“Geogovernment II” module in the Master’s program in Geoinformatics and Surveying. The study focused on various open-source issue-reporting platforms—that is, central platforms where citizens can describe, locate, and report issues such as potholes, litter, or broken streetlights in public places to local authorities. They are very popular as an easily implementable and effective concept for citizen participation. Based on a literature review, the students developed a set of criteria for the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the platforms and, in a final assessment, provided a recommendation for using one of the platforms.
Flavio Horbach presented findings from the “Travelguide” research project conducted by the Departments of Engineering and Economics. In his presentation, he addressed various methods for georeferencing linear and non-linear content from the ARD media library. The georeferenced content is intended to be integrated into automotive infotainment systems via interfaces. Initial results from a prototype show that 61 percent of approximately 4,000 videos could be georeferenced and geocoded based on their metadata.
Alexander Rolwes from i3mainz presented a further development of his process for measuring spatial influencing factors in smart cities, which he had developed as part of the BAM project together with former BA student Pauline Radu and Klaus Böhm. The focus was on analytical studies aimed at optimizing an existing evaluation metric and geo-analysis methods for identifying key spatial factors. Through various phases of model refinement, the team succeeded in achieving more reliable and stable results. The case study for these investigations was parking garage occupancy in Mainz.
Dominik Visca and Max Hoppe presented a method developed as part of the RAFVINIERT project for recreating a georeferenced resident registration database as a pseudo-derivative. They demonstrated how, by combining and linking open geodata, it is possible to (partially) reconstruct public-sector registry datasets without violating data protection regulations. They view their presentation as a contribution to the discussion regarding the increasing relevance of datasets for mapping individual dynamics at a small-scale level.
