Do you have the professional goal of geodesy in governmental surveying in mind? The combined bachelor's degree programme GVK shortens the way there, as you can complete your preparatory service for entry in the 3rd tier of civil service parallel to your studies.
The lecture-free time creates the space for your vocational training with public authorities, where you also do the pre-study internship and your practical project. The topic of your bachelor's thesis will also ensure that theory and practice are closely linked. If you want to reach your goal quickly, have clear career expectations and want to be financially secure during your studies, the combined degree program is the right choice.
In the official surveying system, you define property boundaries to secure ownership of property, which are documented in the official property cadastre. The basic geodata also serve as a planning basis for larger construction projects or the reorganisation of ownership and utilisation conditions, for example in order to make winegrowing more economical.
The Rural Service Centers (DLR) focus on technical and planning processes. Inventory surveys and calculations by geodesists form an important basis for the redesign of the landscape and villages. For this purpose, you will talk to the property owners and maintain contact with a large number of public authorities and various interest groups.
What's in store for you
You will complete a twelve-week job-related pre-study internship at your place of vocational training before the start of your studies (Septemebr 1). This is not necessary if you have already completed related vocational training, for example as a surveying technician or geomatist. During the pre-study internship, you will keep an employment diary to document your main activities.
Training begins on September 1 with an introductory week at the office and the General Administration Seminar. The 1st semester starts in October. The degree program is modular in structure. Each module consists of five semester lessons per week with theoretical and practical components, and is awarded six ECTS credits upon successful completion of the course (coursework and exams).
Between semesters, practical training is provided by your local authority. There you will be taught general and subject-specific administrative knowledge. In addition, the topics of property cadastre, land use planning, property valuation, official basic geodata, spatial data infrastructure, spatial reference and geotopography will be of importance.
The 6th semester includes the 16-week practical project and the ten-week bachelor's thesis. Both take place in cooperation between Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the recruitment authority and are credited towards both studies and career training.
After acquiring the bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) you will take the final exmination for 3rd-tier civil service.
Registration for module exams
Register online for your module exam (demo). Please check in the HIP whether your registrations or cancellations have been entered correctly and on time.
We recommend that you bring the printed list of your applications along to all module examinations. In case of discrepancies, please contact the examination office in good time.
Practical project, bachelor's thesis and grade improvement
It is not possible to register online for project work, bachelor's thesis and grade improvement. Please submit them informally, but in writing and sign them at the examination office. Digital document as an email attachment is also accepted.

Deadlines

Exam results
The results of your examinations can be accessed via the online service HIP. We recommend that you pick up the corrected exam at the secretary's office of the Department of Geoinformatics and Surveying.

In the 6th semester you will complete a 16-week practical project, in addition to which you will write your bachelor thesis within ten weeks, both in cooperation with Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the recruitment office.
In your bachelor's thesis you show that you can write a scientific paper on a topic of geoinformatics and surveying within the given period of ten weeks. In addition to the written version, you create a poster and a website.
In addition to the support in the office, a professor at the university will be available to advise you during the entire time and support you in case of questions and possible problems. She or he will also give you advice in good time before the submission of the paper, as it accounts for 65 percent of the assessment. In addition, you will present the essential content of your work in a 20-minute oral presentation. Here you document your ability to deal with technical topics scientifically and present them in an understandable way. The presentation will be included in the assessment of the thesis at a rate of 25 percent.

Career
After completing the combined bachelor's degree program, you will work for five years in the 3rd tier civil service, im gehobenen technischen Verwaltungsdienst in Rheinland-Pfalz.

Studying for a master's degree
You can either complete the master's degree while you are working or you can continue your studies after five years.
