An innovative learning and workspace is taking shape on the campus of Mainz University of Applied Sciences: LUCY—a sustainable building with approximately 400 m² of floor space, designed specifically for student work, collaborative learning, and creative processes.

What began as a simple needs assessment evolved into an interdisciplinary flagship project that serves as a model for others: As part of an internal university competition, architecture and interior design students developed visionary concepts for flexible, resource-efficient spaces. The best ideas formed the basis for the construction project now underway.

LUCY exemplifies a new generation of university buildings—characterized by sustainability, digitalization, and reversible construction. It was designed using wood and clay, with a focus on energy efficiency, ease of dismantling, and a minimal ecological footprint. The technical infrastructure is tailored to needs and “low-tech” oriented; the structure, built on screw foundations, can be dismantled without leaving any residue.

The project combines teaching, research, and practical application: Students were involved in all planning phases—from the initial sketch to the submission of the building permit application. In cooperation with other universities and external specialist planners, realistic solutions were developed to address the challenges of tomorrow.

LUCY is more than just a building—it is a real-world laboratory for sustainable construction and learning. Its creation is a testament to student engagement, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a bold step toward sustainable university development.
