The University Council Award was established in 2009 and is an annual honor presented to outstanding students and graduates of Mainz University of Applied Sciences. It recognizes the recipients’ outstanding academic achievements as well as their broader social and higher education advocacy efforts.
Mit dem Preis des Hochschulrats werden herausragende Studienleistungen ausgezeichnet. Alle Lehrenden der Hochschule Mainz sind berechtigt, Personen für den Preis des Hochschulrats vorzuschlagen. Jeder Fachbereich kann bis zu drei Arbeiten beim Hochschulrat einreichen. Die Vorschläge müssen mit einer schriftlichen Begründung an die Geschäftsstelle des Hochschulrats gerichtet werden und sollen bis zum Beginn der Vorlesungszeit eines jeden Sommersemesters eingehen. Es handelt sich dabei um Bachelor- oder Masterarbeiten sowie Studienprojekte, die von herausragender wissenschaftlicher oder künstlerischer Qualität sind. Zudem werden Gruppenarbeiten nur berücksichtigt, wenn die individuelle Leistung klar abgrenzbar ist.
Die Auswahl der Preisträgerinnen und Preisträger sowie die Prüfung der vorgeschlagenen Arbeiten erfolgt durch den Hochschulrat. In der Regel findet die Auswahl in der ersten Sitzung des jeweiligen Sommersemesters statt. Das Preisgeld wird auf Basis der Auswahl aufgeteilt, wobei bis zu drei Abschlussarbeiten oder Studienprojekte ausgezeichnet werden können.
Der Hochschulrat kann bis zu drei Vorschläge auszeichnen. Das jährliche Preisgeld in Höhe von insgesamt 10.000 Euro wird von der Volksbank Darmstadt Mainz zur Verfügung gestellt.
Der Hochschulrat berät und unterstützt die Hochschule in allen wichtigen Angelegenheiten. Das Gremium besteht aus zehn Mitgliedern, von denen fünf Mitglieder aus den Bereichen Wirtschaftsleben, Wissenschaft und öffentliches Leben und fünf Mitglieder aus der Hochschule berufen werden. Die Amtszeit des Hochschulrats beträgt fünf Jahre.

University Council Award 2026
This year, the prize—worth a total of 10,000 euros—was awarded to three graduates of Mainz University of Applied Sciences for their theses on building automation, rail transportation, and fast fashion: Lina Abu Yousef (1st prize), Sarah Schütz (2nd prize), and Thomas Range (3rd prize).
University Council Award 2025
Deepa Heckes, a graduate of the “International Business” master’s program, received the award for her thesis on the role of leadership styles in reducing technostress and their impact on work motivation.
University Council Award 2024
This year, a total of six graduates from Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the Symbiosis Centre for Information Technology in India were honored with the award, which is sponsored by Volksbank Darmstadt Mainz and comes with a total prize of 10,000 euros.
2023 University Council Award
This year, three graduates were honored for their master’s theses with the prize, which is sponsored by Mainzer Volksbank and comes with a total award of 10,000 euros: Torben Hammerle, Fabian Naethbohm, and Ina Weimer.
2022 University Council Award
The award was presented to Henrieke Kayser, a graduate of the Spatial Communication program, for her master’s thesis titled “KOE.11-13. What Does the Future of City Centers Look Like, and How Do We Want to Use Them in the Future?”
2021 University Council Award
Michael Darmstadt and Marius Martin received the award for their bachelor’s thesis, “Application of Neural Networks for Real-Time Recognition of German Sign Language Signs.”
2020 University Council Award
Ronja Hemm received the award for her bachelor's thesis, “For Your Sake,” a documentary film about three generations of women in Nepal.
2019 University Council Award
The prize was awarded in equal parts to Yannik Braun for “A Model Experiment to Illustrate Failure Patterns Under Active and Passive Earth Pressure” and Olivia Nigl for “I Wonder—A Film About Dyslexia” for their bachelor’s theses.
2018 University Council Award
The award went to Julian Hermann for his interdisciplinary master’s thesis, “Individual Motion Space: A Virtual Workspace for Modeling Three-Dimensional Structures.”
2017 University Council Award
The award went to Alexander Bothe and Stefan Valerio Meister for their jointly developed master’s thesis, “devio – Dementia Workshop Kit.”
