From the HWF (State Higher School of Economics) to the MSB (Mainz School of Business): The Department of Economics at Mainz University of Applied Sciences will celebrate its 60th anniversary in April 2024. This is a wonderful occasion to celebrate this milestone together with alumni, students, partner companies, members of the university, and the people of Mainz.
We invite you to join us on a fascinating journey through the world of business. Two guiding principles have shaped the history of the Department of Business throughout its successful existence: a practical focus and continuous development. The department has consistently upheld these principles over the past decades and continues to strive to implement new ideas. For two weeks, we will be hosting numerous events in the areas of teaching, research, innovation, and professional practice. At the heart of the anniversary celebrations is an exhibition that highlights the department’s history and can be visited at LUX during this time.

Our Teaching Through the Ages
Over the past 60 years, a great deal has changed in terms of teaching and research. We started with one degree program and 25 business students—today, approximately 2,800 students are enrolled in 21 degree programs at MSB, and 79 staff members, 69 professors, and 177 adjunct instructors are engaged in teaching and research. This makes the Department of Business one of the largest business faculties among the universities of applied sciences in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Our Building Through the Years
A transformation also took place with regard to the buildings. In 1964, the “State Higher School of Economics” opened its doors, offering a view of the entire city from the citadel. Soon after, the institution—now renamed the “University of Applied Sciences of Rhineland-Palatinate”—established its home at “An der Bruchspitze 50” in Mainz-Gonsenheim. Today’s School of Business, with its modern campus at Lucy-Hillebrand-Straße 2, has proven to be extremely attractive. The soccer stars of Mainz 05 chose to be near us with their new stadium, and now Mainz, a hub for biotechnology, is also moving into our neighborhood! We look forward to the developments ahead: soon, the entire Mainz University of Applied Sciences will be united in one location when the Departments of Technology and Design also move to the campus.
