Lydia Bals ist Professorin für Betriebswirtschaftslehre, insbesondere Supply Chain und Operations Management an der Hochschule Mainz. Bis Dezember 2013 leitete sie in der globalen Einkaufsfunktion der Bayer CropScience AG die Abteilung Global Procurement Solutions (beispielsweise zuständig für Einkaufscontrolling, -prozesse, -tools und -systeme sowie Benchmarking und Excellence) und steuert diese Aktivtäten im Kernländernetzwerk (Deutschland, USA, Frankreich, Indien, China und Brasilien). Zuvor war sie als Projektleiterin bei Bayer Business Consulting, der internen Unternehmensberatung des Bayer Konzerns, im In- und Ausland sowie in verschiedenen Funktionen (bspw. Controlling, Vertrieb, Forschung & Entwicklung) der Teilkonzerne Bayer HealthCare, Bayer MaterialScience und Bayer Business Services tätig.

Seit 2008 ist sie als Visiting Scholar mit dem Department for Strategic Management and Globalization an der Copenhagen Business School affiliiert. Ihre Hauptforschungsthemen sind Offshoring, Global Sourcing, nachhaltiges Supply Chain Management und Einkaufsorganisation. Sie publiziert regelmäßig in Fachzeitschriften, wie beispielsweise dem Journal of Supply Chain Management, International Journal of Production Economics, Journal of International Management, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management und anderen.

Lydia Bals is Professor of Supply Chain & Operations Management at the University of Applied Sciences Mainz, Germany and a Visiting Professor at the Department for Strategic Management & Globalization at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. In 2008 she was a Visiting Scholar at Wharton and Columbia Business School, United States.

From 2008 to 2013 she worked in the industry full-time, maintaining a research affiliation to Copenhagen Business School. Her last position at Bayer was head of the global department of Procurement Solutions (e.g. Sustainability, Methods, Tools & Systems; Benchmarking and Excellence) at Bayer CropScience AG, also steering the international Procurement Solutions network in Germany, North America, France, India, China and Brazil. Prior to that she worked as a Project Manager at Bayer Business Consulting, managing projects in various functional areas and countries (e.g. Spain, Mexico, Turkey).

Her main research areas are Sustainable Supply Chain Management, Offshoring and Procurement Organization. She has published in the Journal of Supply Chain Management, Journal of International Management, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Purchasing & Supply Management and other academic outlets.
