Digital Geo Media

Automated Detection and Location-Based Use of Spatial References in Digital Media (HSP3)

Digital Geo Media is an interdisciplinary, cross-departmental initiative aimed at improving teaching, based on two degree programs (Geoinformatics & Surveying, Digital Media) and two research groups (GISLab, WIMM). This project benefits students in several degree programs across both departments (including through elective options).

This project is funded under the Higher Education Pact (HSP) by the federal and state governments. As a result, numerous additional student slots have been created at Mainz University of Applied Sciences in recent years. HSP funding covers the following three program lines:
• Quality in Teaching
• Increased Participation of Women in Science
• Increasing Permeability Between Vocational and Academic Education

DigitalGeoMedia aims to contribute to Mainz University of Applied Sciences within the “Quality in Teaching” program line. This is the home of the project “Establishment, Maintenance, and Further Development of Digital Geo Media—Automated Detection and Location-Based Use of Spatial References in Digital Media,” which launched on March 1, 2022.

Challenges/Goals: Spatial context is increasingly omnipresent in digital and social media as well (e.g., map services on social media, geomarketing, and geodata in media libraries). Both technological and economic issues must be addressed here. Challenges stem from the current lack of expertise among students and future employees in companies regarding such projects. For this reason, Digital Geo Media aims to pool and further develop expertise through interdisciplinary collaboration.

Methods/Measures: Based on the establishment of DigitalGeoMedia, the following tasks and subject areas are addressed:
• Design and development of applications for recognizing and determining spatial context when using various digital media and methods
• Evaluation, analysis, and use of newly acquired data sources
• Deployment and quality assurance in the context of spatially referenced digital media
• Integration into research-based teaching and dissemination to further enhance students’ qualifications
