AI-DPA Annual Meeting 2026: Research Exchange Between Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the University of Koblenz

On June 30, 2026, this year’s annual meeting of the AI-DPA research project took place at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Doctoral students from Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the University of Koblenz presented the current status of their dissertation projects and discussed them with the professors of the research college.

The process mining segment of the meeting included, among other things, two presentations:

Jonas Blatt (University of Koblenz), together with Patrick Delfmann, presented a new approach to context-aware relaxed frequent subgraph mining. The method identifies recurring collaboration patterns in unstructured business processes—such as in enterprise collaboration systems—where traditional process mining methods reach their limits. By using similarity-based rather than strictly isomorphic pattern recognition, even processes that vary structurally but are comparable in content can be reliably identified. The method was successfully tested on both a call center dataset and real-world data from the UniConnect collaboration platform.

Flavio Horbach (Mainz University of Applied Sciences) presented the current status of his dissertation project on the representation and abstraction of oncological registry data for process mining. Based on the observation that real-world cancer treatment processes rarely follow a linear course, he identified key research gaps regarding how clinical registry data (oBDS) can be meaningfully converted into object-centered event logs (OCEL 2.0). He also presented a semi-automated, LLM-supported transformation approach in which a language model suggests mappings, which are then reviewed by subject matter experts and implemented by a deterministic engine—ensuring transparent and reproducible results.

In addition to the presentations and joint discussion, the meeting also focused on the general planning of the research college as well as organizational issues regarding the project’s future course.
